| Bio: | PhD student in the Program in Indo-European Studies at UCLA, between third and fourth year. I'm writing my dissertation on the survival of strong verbs in the English language. May 2005, University of Arizona: BA in linguistics, BA in classics, BS in mathematics, minor in computer science; magna cum laude. I speak only English, but I claim varying degrees of reading and philological proficiency in various dead languages. My motto about languages is "the deader the better," and my favorite of those I've studied is ancient Greek. QUOTES According to my t-shirt: Front: University of Arizona Department of Linguistics I am a linguist. Back No, I don't speak a dozen languages. Phonology has nothing to do with bumps on the head. No, it's not a dirty word. Syntax is not about religion or economics. Etymology has nothing to do with studying bugs. Yes, it is neat! No, it won't make me rich. No, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it. "Polyphloisboisterous Homer of old Threw all his augments into the sea. Although he had often been courteously told That perfect imperfects begin with an 'e'. But the poet replied, with a dignified air, 'What the digamma does anyone care?'" unattributed poem found in Clyde Pharr's Homeric Greek "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means." The Princess Bride "When _I_ use a word," Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean--neither more nor less." Through the Looking Glass "Sic me colitote, ut deum." Cyrus apud Xenophontem apud Ciceronem (De Senectute) “I said it in Hebrew—I said it in Dutch— I said it in German and Greek: But I wholly forgot (and it vexes me much) That English is what you speak!” The Hunting of the Snark "Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read." Groucho Marx "'Roast beef.' It is the Swedish for beef that is roasted." Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events "She performs linguistic magic! BURN THE WITCH!" "У меня нет Жени." "Hector should never have touched Achilles' menis." Paper of one of my undergrads. | ||||||||||
